The Burwell Butter Factory
|
|
The Burwell Butter Factory (BBF) was established by W. F. Potter. It opened in March of 1916. Homemade bread and biscuits were transformed into sublime gourmet delicacies when adorned with BBF butter. Over the years, the sweet clover butter became a regional favorite. Emory Garner (current ownerÂ’s Grandfather) was one of many cream producers for the BBF. In 1954 Emory won the #1 Cream Producer. Like many local farmers, Emory and Lucille Garner worked all week. They traveled to Burwell on Saturday night with cream, eggs and sometimes chickens. The BBF paycheck purchased groceries and essentials. The BBF was still thriving in 1966 when it celebrated 50 years. In the 1970's local farmers began selling whole milk to larger dairy companies. The Butter Factory slowly lost their cream supply. FDA production rules increased in number and strictness. 58 years of quality butter production ended in 1974. After butter production stopped the building fell into a quiet retirement until it was purchased in 2001.
